Over the last three decades, wellness has become a popular discussion topic globally. In every corner of the planet, people try to improve their lifestyle through exercise, stress relief activities and healthy eating. Trying to cut the bad habit of comfort eating has become one of the most common resolutions.

This has generated a massive interest around organic extra virgin olive oil. Not only is Mediterranean cookery extraordinarily tasty but it also enjoys the reputation of being one of the healthiest diets in the world. An what is the cornerstone of Mediterranean diet? Extra virgin olive oil of course!

Mediterranean Diet & Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil

So, is the Mediterranean diet so healthy as they say? As an Italian who grew up on bread, pasta and pizza, my answer is: it depends, Like in every place with a temperate climate, Mediterranean countries benefits from the generosity of nature, farming is an easier task when you don’t have to dal with extreme weather conditions and people can easily source good quality food and have a complete diet. Organic extra virgin olive oil has been farmed for thousand years in the Mediterranean basin and the quantity of land dedicated to olive farming has increased along the centuries.

Forget the modern supermarket and the huge fields intensively farmed. In a world where biodiversity was the expression of an uncontaminated nature, my grandparents grew up on a wide variety of vegetables, farmed and spontaneous, ugly but tasty fruit, unrefined cereals, beans, good quality meat and cheese (or fish for those living closer to the coast), “natural” wine in moderation and plenty of time spent outdoor.

It’s a sure thing that life conditions have improved over the last century, however we’ve lost an impressive amount of biodiversity and intensive agriculture is the unsustainable practice behind cheap, tasteless fruit and veggies on the shelves of supermarkets. Same story for extra virgin olive oil: most of the EVOOs you can purchase for a couple of bucks are nowhere near the blessed “green gold” that we are all looking for to improve our health. It is an oil with poor organoleptic characteristics and scarce in nutrients. When you live in big cities traceability has become hard work. What you can do is looking for organic extra virgin olive oil to make sure it has been produced in harmony with nature and buy from a trusted shop who can provide you all the information needed to buy a good quality, traceable EVOO.
